By now, most of us have experienced AI in our everyday life.
When we use Face ID to open our phones, check out Netflix recommendations based on our preferences, ask Siri to get directions, make purchases on our cards that have security systems to protect us from scammers, or spell check our documents we are using the power of AI.
It’s easy to see how AI has become an integral part of our lives and is enhancing our daily experiences. However, despite its amazing capabilities, AI cannot replace the unique qualities that make human relationships so special, especially in business where relationships are everything.
Our business world relies on people understanding people in order to thrive (even AI has been built by people based on identifying people’s needs).
While IQ (intelligence quotient) is important, our EQ (emotional quotient) will determine up to 80% of our business success.
EQ or Emotional Intelligence is our ability to recognise, understand and manage emotions effectively in ourselves and others to build strong working relationships, something that AI is not capable of.
Here are some reasons why the human connection is essential in business.
- Decision making is emotional and logical
Up to 90 – 95% of our decisions are influenced by our emotional brain system. Emotions help us quickly evaluate situations and make fast decisions, which can later be justified through our slower logical thought process. Critical thinking must take into account both the logical and emotional component, which is something that AI cannot do.
2. Communication is predominantly non-verbal and not always linear
55% of our communication is nonverbal – I call this our “Vibe” that people feel intuitively around us. 38% of our communication is perceived through the tone of our voice and only 7% is the actual words spoken. When we use AI we are generally only using words or 7% of our true communication abilities.
3. Trust is the glue that keeps us together
Trust is essential in every aspect of business. It enables collaboration, teamwork, leadership, delegation, sales, loyalty, problem solving, understanding and tolerance. AI will never be able to generate trust as we need authenticity, vulnerability, reliability and honesty to build a meaningful connection.
4. Creativity, Fun and Spontaneity
Part of being human is our ability to “think outside the square” to adapt to our environment and introduce what is required in that moment to bring fresh energy or different outcomes. Using different parts of our brain for creativity or fun (not just linear or rational) is a human strength that helps us to master our personal performance.which cannot be provided by AI.
5. Connection, curiosity, understanding and empathy
While AI can analyse data to recognise patterns, it is not able to understand emotions. Humans have complex, multifaceted emotions and don’t work to an algorithm. Whether it’s a heartfelt conversation, a brainstorming session, or a lighthearted fun team building activity the personal touch is required to build real connection with lasting impact.
6. Shared experiences and memories
In business, we choose to work with people we Like, Know and Trust. This is built over time through shared experiences, connection and memories that create a sense of belonging that AI cannot provide. The joy of reminiscing about past adventures, celebrating milestones, and supporting each other through challenges is a uniquely human experience and incredibly valuable.
7. Ethical and moral considerations
Things in business are not always black and white – there are lots of shades of grey. Human relationships are guided by ethical and moral considerations. Decisions in relationships often involve complex moral judgments that require empathy, compassion, and a deep understanding of human values. AI, while capable of processing vast amounts of data, lacks the moral compass that guides human interactions.
8. Mentoring, personal growth and development
Relationships contribute to personal growth and development. Through interactions with others, we learn, evolve, and gain new perspectives. AI, however, does not have the capacity for personal growth or the ability to inspire growth in others. The mutual growth that occurs in human relationships is a vital aspect of our development and begins with connection.
9. Positive workplace culture (how we do things around here)
A positive workplace culture is built on human interactions, mutual respect and shared values. Team cohesion, motivation and a sense of belonging are nurtured through genuine human connections. Leaders who inspire, mentor and support their teams create an environment where employees thrive and perform at their best. AI cannot replicate the complex dynamics of human relationships that contribute to a positive and productive workplace.
While AI continues to revolutionise our lives, it cannot replace the essence of human relationships. The emotional intelligence, authenticity, creativity, and shared experiences that define our connections with others are uniquely human qualities.
As we embrace the advancements in AI, it is essential to cherish and nurture the relationships that bring meaning and fulfillment to our lives.
The “Soft Skills” of being human are the glue that holds our businesses together and are essential for our continued success. Employees with strong interpersonal or people skills have proven to experience far more significance, growth and success than those who lack them.
At the end of the day, we do business with and through people. AI is here to support us, but it is our people who matter most.
When we get this right, everything else becomes much easier.
