In the era of AI disruption, the landscape of leadership is evolving quickly. Things are moving at a rapid pace with constant changes and advancements.
Leaders must be flexible and willing to pivot strategies as new developments arise – dancing on a moving carpet within a dynamic technology environment.
Research has shown that within workplaces today, individuals are processing an average of 74 GB of data every day – which is more than our ancestors did in their lifetimes.
Whilst the speed of AI is doubling every two years, we are still working with a “Human Operating System” within our brains that is 200,000 years old and the signs of Cognitive Overload from increased mental demands are being felt by many. Leaders are often the ones who are suffering the most as they must regularly sift through large volumes of data to make decisions in high stakes situations.
As Leaders, we have the dual challenge right now:
- Understand and manage the impact of AI Technology Changes to our strategies, processes and procedures
- Understand and manage the impact of AI Technology Changes to our people’s well-being and ability to thrive in their role
The integration of AI into many sectors is not just a technological shift but a transformation that requires a new breed of leaders. Changes in how we work also requires changes in how we lead.
Here are the key leadership soft skills needed to thrive in this dynamic environment:
- Adaptability and Continuous Learning:The rapid pace of AI innovation demands leaders who can embrace change, stay abreast of trends and adapt quickly. Leaders need to have a clear mind in order to learn and adapt, then learn and adapt again much faster than ever before.
- Emotional Intelligence:AI may handle data, but people manage people. Leaders need to help their people navigate the changes while staying productive and avoid mental or physical burnout. This starts with self-awareness around our cognitive health and a level of understanding of the impact of hyper change on our autonomic nervous systems.
- Connection: Interpersonal skills including active listening, empathy, compassion and understanding are required to open up psychologically safe conversations where people are willing to share how they are really feeling.
- Communication:Clear and frequent communication is vital – especially when explaining complex AI changes to non-technical team members. Sharing the future vision and setting expectations for the path ahead is an important part of preparing your people.
- Change Management:Leaders must be able to manage change, anticipate and address fears and guide their people through uncertain transitions with as much certainty as possible.
- Resilience and Well Being:Leaders must know how to put their own oxygen mask on first so that they can also help others through their challenges. Leaders will undoubtedly face setbacks as they navigate the AI landscape but the ability to bounce forward and learn from their challenges will set them apart.
- Ethical Consideration: Whilst AI presents many opportunities it also comes with significant ethical considerations to ensure it is used responsibly, fairly and with transparency. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should – and leaders need to develop a though process that supports the right decision making.
Leadership in the AI digital era requires a combination of both strategic and soft skills to ensure that we are shaping a future organisation that:
- Aligns with our values
- Enhances human capabilities
- Drives productivity, progress and performance
- Supports our people to be their best and thrive
As we continue to explore the potential of AI, let’s start with helping our people to be equipped to guide us into the new frontier with wisdom, strength, personal wellbeing and human connection.
